Vacation in Curaçao

You may be wondering what to do on vacation once here in Curaçao. Our island offers a great selection of activities, restaurants, beaches and even an exciting nightlife. All of these are wonderful things to do in Curaçao. Let me take you through all the places and activities I love most on this island. You will gain a local’s insight on how to make the most of your stay in Curaçao.

Activities: Things to do in Curaçao

If you really wish to know our island, our history, our culture, or just even explore it: the best way to do so is through an activity. Fortunately, in Curaçao there are various kinds of activities you can do. It’s just a matter of selecting the most interesting or best suited one(s) for you. These are my favorite activities to do. The first would have to be the UTV Expedition West, where you can drive through the rugged and wild trials on the West Side. It was the most exciting thing I have ever done! The roar of the engine, the speed, the mud and the dust: getting dirty in the best way, for the best reason! Another fantastic tour would have to be the Jeep Safari tours that take you deep into nature. Through off-road trails you will visit places you never could have reached before.

There are charming walking tours through the city centers of Punda and Otrobanda. With these walking tours I learned about the history of the city centers and discovered the increasing numbers of impressive artworks around the cities. One of the most relaxing ways to discover Curaçao and learn its history is to take a bus tour. Another, in my opinion, is to take a boat tour. As an island, we have a plethora of boat tours like trips to Klein Curaçao: a remote, uninhabited island off the coast of Curaçao. There are Sunset Trips where you can watch the most beautiful sunsets in the Caribbean. Our coast is full of phenomenal and mesmerizing snorkeling stops. A snorkeling boat tour will take you to places only accessible via boat. There are various snorkeling spots on our West and East Coast.

The waters that surround our island are stunningly clear and crystal blue. It makes Curaçao an excellent and magical place to go diving. When I first went diving, I was enchanted to discover a complete underwater world. Being underwater was exhilarating, relaxing, fascinating, enchanting and breathtaking. One of my last favorite activities to do in Curaçao is to go swimming with the Dolphins at the Dolphin Academy. Dolphins are such majestic and playful animals. Here in Curaçao you can enter the lagoon with the dolphins to swim, touch and you can even play with them. Before entering the lagoon, we are carefully instructed on how to handle the dolphins, what to do, how to position ourselves and what not to do. This way we can enjoy the dolphins, respect them and ensure the dolphins enjoy our presence as well.

Restaurants in Curaçao

Our island is a convergence of many different cultures, which has shaped the food we eat on the island. I have discovered that in this melting pot of cultures comes a very mixed variety of food. We have amazingly delicious restaurants spread across the island, representing local food or food from around the world. We even have this fusion where certain international cuisines are fused with a local style. Here in Curaçao we have many restaurants offering different prices and types of cuisines. Here is a list of my favorite places to eat.

In Pietermaai I enjoy eating at Kome, MosaCaña or Saint Tropez. Pietermaai is full of many restaurants housed in an old colonial house. At Mambo Boulevard you’ll find an assortment of restaurants: I enjoy eating at Greenhouse, Bocas and Bonita. At Caracasbaai, near Jan Thiel, I love eating at Brisa do Mar – Pop’s Place, which is right on the water. Sunsets here are stunning. I also love eating at Riffort at their various restaurants.

Beaches of Curaçao

Curaçao is full of the most stunning beaches you have ever seen. On the West Coast the beaches are spectacular with sandy beaches and clear blue waters. Along our Southern Coasts there are also many beaches that are breathtakingly beautiful. My favorite beaches are Jan Thiel, Mambo, Grote Knip, Kleine Knip and Playa Jeremi.

Jan Thiel and Mambo are beaches located close to Willemstad and near the East Coast. Jan Thiel is one of the most popular beaches in Curaçao and personally one of my favorites. I adore the view, the food, the sandy beach and the relaxing atmosphere. Jan Thiel Beach is a great place to swim, relax and full of great restaurants and stores to shop at. Mambo Beach is close to Jan Thiel and is also a wonderful place to visit. Within the boulevard that adjoins the beach, there are various stores, restaurants and at night it’s a great place to go out to its bars to drink and dance.

On our West Coast are the sister beaches of Knip. There is Grote Knip, which means Big Knip. This bigger beach is known for its natural beauty. The water here is one of the bluest and clearest on the island. It’s entirely picturesque. Its sister Klein Knip, which means Small Knip, is about half its size. Both beaches are free of charge, with no entrance fee. However, you must pay for beach chairs. At Kleine Knip it is a great place to go swimming and snorkeling. At these beaches, the beach chair that you rent at one beach is valid at the other too. Here you can split your time at both beaches and have a fun day at the beach. The last beach is one that I have been going to since I was a young child, Playa Jeremi. This beach is a small cove that is hidden, you need to walk a flight of stone stairs to reach it. This natural beach with soft pebbles is magical. The water shimmers in the sun and it’s a beach that is usually very quiet.

Nightlife: Happy Hour in Curaçao

Depending on my mood, there are different places I can go to enjoy a nice drink, live music, great ambiance and of course a happy hour. There are a few places that offer a daily happy hour like De Heeren, a restaurant at Zuikertuin Mall. At De Heeren there are even a few nights a week where they play live music. Every Wednesday, Hemingway Beach Bar, Madero Ocean Club and Cabana at Mambo have a great happy hour. Thursdays you should spend in the City Center in Punda to enjoy the weekly Punda Vibes. La Bohème turns into the ultimate bar that is fun and where they play live music. On Fridays, the best place to be is at Bonita Beach or Chill at the beach of Mambo. Of course, every Saturday there is a happy hour at Zanzibar at Jan Thiel Beach. So, there is always a daily happy hour where you can make the most of your vacation.
