Have you noticed the fascinating street art in Otrobanda made of copper? The artist behind it is Giovanni Abath. He initially worked with metal, starting as an electrician before moving on to refinery and construction jobs. Using leftover materials, he found his passion for art, a passion that he lost as he grew older.

Many of his artworks can be found in the historic area of Willemstad. One notable piece is ‘History in Motion,’ showcased during the flag day celebration. He also created ‘Konosé bo mes I lo bo konosé Universo,’ which means ‘Know yourself and you will know the universe” which is part of the ‘Emancipate from mental slavery’ project.

After gaining widespread recognition for his thought-provoking pieces, Giovanni continues to inspire others with his powerful messages of self-awareness and liberation. His art serves as a reminder to break free from mental constraints and embrace personal growth. Indeed, in September 2023, he opened his first art gallery called ‘7.1 Experience’. Here, he shares his story of perseverance despite facing discouragement from many people.

7.1 Experience, a new start

The main symbol of the ‘7.1 Experience’ is the ‘Light Carrier’ statue, standing 7.1 meters tall, matching the name of his gallery. These numbers are inspired by the alphabet; ‘G’ is the 7th letter, and ‘A’ is the first. Giovanni conducted research before signing his artwork with these numbers. Number 7 represents God, and number 1 represents Love. When added together the result is 8, symbolizing infinity. His metaphor is that his work shares love and can last forever. The “Light Carrier” symbolizes a new beginning for him.

At the art gallery, Giovanni tells the story behind each of his artworks. It’s more than just seeing the exhibition; it’s a complete experience. He discusses art that reflects the history of Curaçao, including the impact of slavery in the past, as well as pieces related to family and life.

“Make what you love become your hobby, without necessary have money” – Giovanni Abath.
