The Full Moon Hike to the Tafelberg (Table Mountain) is the most adventurous hike you can do on Curaçao. Its name alone had us excited and piqued our curiosity. The Management Team of Curaçao Activities put on their hiking shoes and joined Rock Climbing Curaçao for a memorable experience. Though, keep in mind before signing up for this tour it is important to mention you must be in good health, in good shape, and without any injuries.

Rock Climbing Curaçao is located on the terrain of the Santa Barbara Plantation and the meeting time for the Moon Hike is at 4 pm. Once you arrive, you will be welcomed by a friendly guide who will direct you to the store where you need to fill in a waiver and pay for the tour. The hiking tour costs $20 per person, and you get a headlamp for the walk back in the dark. After a short explanation of the hiking route the hike begins!

Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Plantation is private property and is more than 1,250 hectares of untouched nature, stunning hilly landscape with a view of the Caribbean Sea on one side and on the other, the bay of Spanish Waters.

The first part of the full moon hike is quite flat, and you are surrounded a beautiful green scenery with the view of the Tafelberg in front of you. The Tafelberg is around 240 meters high and makes you wonder how you will ever get to the top of the mountain.

The second part is where this full moon hike gets more exciting. You slowly walk up the side of the mountain through a small forest path and climb higher over large stones. It is a rough climb but happily, the guides are there to assist you and keep a good eye on the group. After 1 hour and 20 minutes of walking up the mountain, we were finally on top of the Tafelberg, and it is such a reward! The view is phenomenal, and it offers such a stunning view of the island. In the distance, you can even see the highest mountain of Curaçao: Christoffel berg, the windmills on the north side, and even the coastline on the west side of the island. Up close you have a magnificent panoramic view of the lovely Spanish Waters, the luxurious villas, and the Caribbean Sea.

Tafelberg

A feeling of peace comes over you as you watch the sun slowly disappears into the Caribbean Sea. As the sun gives way to the full moon, the atmosphere changes immediately. It gets dark quickly and you need to wear the headlamp to be able to see as you walk back down the mountain. Going down the mountain is right away thrilling! Since it is easier than climbing up, but you must be careful where you walk. On the way, you see an army of hermit crabs that do not seem to mind our presence. Through the silence, you can hear the hermit crabs walking through the bushes and crickets.
